Witness for Wildlife
"...break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean." -John Muir John Muir was a witness of wild things and wild lands, so precise and passionate in his testimony that when he spoke to President Theodore Roosevelt about an area he loved high in the Sierra Nevada, the President listened and Yosemite National Park was born. Other witnesses, Henry David Thoreau and Marjory Stoneman Douglas, gave us Walden and the Everglades. Now it's your turn. Become a Witness for Wildlife. Witness for Wildlife, a new Freedom to Roam initiative, inspires trips into the wildlife corridors of the continent for people to hike and climb and paddle and camp, to witness the wonders of the wildlands and the importance of connected habitat. Join a growing community of Witness for Wildlife citizen naturalists, to share stories, images, and video from your trips, and to learn how to take action to protect critical corridors. Anybody can do it. Find out how at WitnessforWildlife.org
Green washing??
Looking back: Were the 2010 Olympics green, green-washed, or green-wished?
The 2010 Vancouver winter Olympics were to have been the greenest in history and there’s no shortage of hits when you search for “Green Olympics 2010.” But how green were they, really? Did the Olympic organizers and promoters succeed at their mission, did they wash it green, or did they just wish the games were green? A quick roundup:
There’s the official story. There’s the David Suzuki Foundation overview, scorecard (they got a bronze), and press release. The NYT highlights new-fangled Zambonis.
Blog-wise, the Vancouver Examiner has a host of posts, and there’s also the local skeptic. Then there are the summarizing believers here and here, the accountability crew, and the open-ended inquiry. Other skepticism addresses various kinds of construction, like the ski slopes (plus the lack of snow.)
There’s more than I could read - what stories have you found to support a Green, Green-washed, or Green-wished argument for the 2010 Vancouver winter Olympics?

Forests Are Growing Faster, Ecologists Discover; Climate Change Appears to Be Driving Accelerated Growth.
Speed is not a word typically associated with trees; they can take centuries to grow. However, a new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found evidence that forests in the Eastern United States are growing faster than they have in the past 225 years. The study offers a rare look at how an ecosystem is responding to climate change. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/02/100201171641.htm

Malibu Clean Water Act approved!
Thursday, November 5th was a beautiful day. The way our community rocked the hearing was inspiring to see. LA Times headlines that afternoon read “Hundreds Pack Hearings on Malibu Septic tanks” About 160 people attended Thursday’s hearing to show their support for Clean Water at Malibu. Our chapter was in effect at the hearing and handed over around 1,150 petition signatures. Nice to have the Clean Water Act enforced in LA. Waiting for that since 1972. This victory was long fought for, and will be sweet forever.http://surfriderwlam.org/cleanthebu/?p=727
Is a Cap- and -Trade System really a disguised Tax?
If a polluter emits one less ton, he will be able to use one less allowance, saving the money associated with the price of the allowance—there is an opportunity cost of emitting. Once polluters see that reducing pollution saves money, their incentives will be aligned with society’s goals.

Oct. 15 -President Obama visits Green Seed school in New Orleans
October 15, 2009. President Obama today visited one of the schools that Global Green USA targeted in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to rebuild green. Thanks to the Bush Clinton Katrina Fund, Global Green provided a $70,000 grant and free technical expertise to the Dr. Martin Luther King Charter School, which is helping to save approximately $23,000 a year in energy expenses that can now be spent on education.
Brooklyn, NY (Sept. 26, 2009) – 41 low-income New York City families received the keys to their new Habitat for Humanity - New York City homes in a joyful celebration in Ocean Hill-Brownsville, Brooklyn.
The ribbon-cutting marked an historic first for Habitat-NYC: This is the largest and greenest multifamily complex ever built by a Habitat affiliate in the nation. These 41 affordable green condominiums are expected to receive LEED Gold certification, one of the highest green building ratings.
Joining the festivities were some of the almost 10,000 volunteers who worked together to build these homes, funders who provided financial support, and faith and community leaders, and elected officials who made the new homes possible. www.ecowireless.com
